Germany Legalizes Cannabis! Federal Cabinet Approves Legalization of Cannabis

CANNABIS LEGALIZATION DECIDED

The legalization of cannabis is controversial in Germany. Now the federal cabinet has decided to partially legalize the drug. According to Health Minister Lauterbach, the purchase and possession of cannabis will be permitted in future.

The German government has wanted to legalize cannabis for some time. Months ago, Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach presented a key points paper with which the partial legalization of the drug is to be initiated. Now the Federal Cabinet has approved the draft bill.

WHEN WILL CANNABIS BE LEGAL?

It is not yet clear exactly when the law will come into force. That depends on how quickly the Bundestag discusses it after the summer break and decides on legalization. As with any law, the Bundesrat must also formally deal with it, but according to Lauterbach, it cannot stop it as it does not require approval in the state chamber. Federal Health Minister Lauterbach is convinced that the law will be in force by January 1, 2024. Cannabis will remain banned until then.

When the new regulation comes into force, ongoing investigations and criminal proceedings will also be covered. The federal government is also planning a law to regulate the sale of cannabis in stores. Lauterbach announced a corresponding draft before the end of the year.
